  Romans 9:1-5 When you have something important to share that you think is life-changing, you hope people will respond positively. It doesn’t matter if you’re the president, governor, mayor, or, in my case, a preacher. It’s frustrating when people don’t respond the way you hope. So, I can feel Paul’s frustration, which he shares with his readers in the opening verses of Romans 9.   Paul closed the previous chapter with a heartfelt declaration, telling the Roman church that he was “convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” ( Rom. 8:38-39 ). Now, as we turn the page to chapter 9, we find Paul talking about the grief he felt for his fellow Jews who rejected his message about Jesus. Romans 8:14-17 It is written that on the Day of Pentecost, the streets of Jerusalem were filled with pilgrims celebrating one of Judaism’s most important festivals. At the same time, one hundred and fifty of Jesus’ closest followers gathered for prayer in an upper room in that very same city. This gathering took place just ten days after Jesus departed from his disciples. At that time, Jesus commissioned his disciples to take the gospel message to the ends of the earth. However, they would need to wait until the Holy Spirit came upon them ( Acts 1:8 ). This promise was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit swept through the upper room like a mighty wind and rested on each of them like a flame of fire. Then the Spirit empowered them to preach the Gospel in the diverse languages of the people gathered in Jerusalem ( Acts 2 ).   Pharaoh's Daughter Finding Baby Moses Konstantin Flavitsky, 1855 Exodus 1:8-2:10 When God appeared to Abraham in Haran, God asked him to pick up and move to an undisclosed location. In exchange for heading out on this adventure, God promised to make his descendants a blessing to the nations ( Gen. 12:1-9 ). As the story goes in Genesis, Abraham and three generations of his descendants carried that promise forward. Due to famine and the providential placement of Jacob’s son Joseph in a position of power, Jacob’s family ended up in Egypt where Joseph was Prime Minister. Although Joseph ended up in Egypt because of some family dysfunction, his presence in Egypt brought blessings to his family and to the nations.  When we turn from Genesis to Exodus, Abraham’s descendants still reside in Egypt.
